Send Your Teenager To Cathay Pacific Flight School

Cathay Pacific just announced that it will be rolling out it’s “I Can Fly Program Spring 2015” to high school juniors and seniors in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is actually the first I’d heard of the program, which had apparently been a big success in previous years.

The 8-week program will guide participants through a wide range of airline-related topics during a series of fields trips, lecture, and hands-on exercises. Here’s the detailed agenda for the 8 weeks:

  1. Catering
  2. Sales & Marketing
  3. Airport
  4. Cargo
  5. Cabin Crew
  6. Pilot
  7. Engineering
  8. Graduation

Classes will be held from April through May on Wednesdays (except Saturday, April 18), between 5:00 and 7:00pm, with locations including San Francisco International Airport (SFO) & within downtown San Francisco.

Best of all, the program is free of charge other than the cost of transportation to/from classes. You can apply using this link, with applications due by Sunday, March 15 at 5PM PST.

Here is a summary of who is eligible – I’ve looked around and they do not define the “San Francisco area” in further detail as far as I can tell.

Eligibility

How do I join the “I Can Fly” Spring 2015 San Francisco Program?

First, you must meet some basic requirements:

  • Be enrolled full-time in GRADE 11 or 12 in a public or private high school within the San Francisco area.
  • Have transportation to and from the San Francisco downtown and San Francisco International Airport area.
  • Have demonstrated interest in commercial aviation.
  • Be available to attend each & every class (no exceptions will be made).

This actually sounds really cool and interesting, but barring a 21 Jump Street-style transformation, I won’t be able to participate. But if you have a teenager at home or know of one that’s a budding #AVGeek, make sure to pass this along!
