Cathay Pacific Updates: SFO Flight Added And Award Availability Wide Open, New Amenity Kits

There’s a couple exciting updates from Cathay Pacific that I wanted to pass along.

New SFO Flight

Cathay Pacific has announced a 3rd flight from SFO starting June 12, 2015, to be operated by a 3-cabin Boeing 77W. Unfortunately, this is not a 4-cabin plane which means no First Class cabin.

The flight will operated with 3X weekly service from SFO on W/F/Su, and takes the place of the 1:00AM flight as CX’s latest of the day, with a 1:30AM scheduled departure time starting in the summer. There’s a note that the route is still subject to government and regulatory approval, but is available to be booked as of today.

Here’s the full schedule for both the summer and winter periods:

Making things even better, is that nearly every single date I’ve checked after June 12th has 2 Business Class, 2 Premium Economy, and 5 Economy award seats available. In my opinion, Cathay Pacific Business Class is one of the very best products you can fly today, and all this additional availability out of SFO makes me excited to get started with summer travel plans, and would encourage others to do the same before these seats get scooped up.

New Amenity Kits

Cathay also released new First Class and Business Class amenity kits on long-haul flights which will feature products from Aesop and Jurlique, respectively. Personally, I could care less about the products inside, but do like to re-use the bag itself on future trips.

Take a look at the new First Class amenity kits for him and her:

An interesting feature of the re-designed kits is that they were purposefully designed to be stackable, which I guess is useful if you have heaps of them at home.

So far, I’d say the reaction to the new kits is lukewarm at least on Flyertalk. In particular, the new Business Class kits are getting some negative reviews for feeling “cheap” which I can understand, since it basically looks like a sock with a string around it.
